チベットのスカーフ カタ
a gift for the trip
The day I left Nepal, one of my Nepali friend Ni gave me this scarf.This is not just a scarf but "Khata" which is one of the ceremonial items. It originated in Tibetan Buddhism.
When Ni gave it to me, she told me that this was for my safe trip and draped around my neck. And this scarf is not for all of my journeys but only for the trip back to Japan. It sounds very spiritual!
Mantra
Indeed these Tibetan scarves are given to one who is leaving on a trip praying the safety, draped around the neck as an honor to someone.There are khatas in blue, green, red, and white, multicolored. The khata that Ni offered me is in multicolored and has eight patterns of symbols which I guess the om mani padme hum on it. It is called Mantra.
Since Nepal is a sandwiched country located between Tibet to its north, and India to its east, west and south, Nepali culture seemingly is a fusion of their influences. As Momo which I tried some times in Nepal is also from Tibet originally, we see many traditions and ceremonies which root in Tibet. This Khata is also one of them.
旅のためのプレゼント
ネパールを旅立つ日、ネパール友達のNiがこのスカーフをくれました。これはただのスカーフではなくて、「カタ」といって儀式的な意味があります。チベット仏教に由来するんです。
Niがわたしにこれをくれたとき、彼女はわたしの日本への帰りの旅の安全のためにと、首に掛けてくれました。このチベットのスカーフは旅立つ人の安全を願って、首に掛けてもらえるものです。そして、わたしの旅行全体、ではなくて、その旅だけのためのものです。なんか神秘的！
マントラ
青や緑、赤、白、いろいろな色の混じったものがあります。Niがくれたのは色が混じったもので、「オム・マニ・ペメ・フム」なのか、記号のような模様が8つあるものでした。マントラと呼ばれるものです。ネパールは北をチベット、東西南をインドに挟まれているので、文化の影響を受けているようです。わたしがネパールで何度か食べた”モモ”も、もとはチベットのものであるように、多くの習慣や儀式がチベットにルーツがあります。このカタも、その一つ。
